Volunteers at Horsham Matters

Volunteer with us

Give your time. Change a life.

Volunteers are at the heart of Horsham Matters. Every week, around 150 local people generously give their time to support neighbours facing hunger, financial hardship, and isolation. From foodbanks and cafés to our charity shop and fundraising events, our volunteers help make sure no one in Horsham District has to face hardship alone.

Whether you can give a few hours occasionally or volunteer more regularly, your time really matters.

Why volunteer with Horsham Matters

Volunteering with Horsham Matters isn’t just “helping a charity”, it’s standing beside your neighbours when they need it most. It’s meeting someone with a smile at a foodbank session. It’s serving a warm meal with care. It’s about ensuring a family feels welcome through our Connecting Cafés. It’s giving someone the confidence to take their next step.

No matter your skills or experience, there is a place for you here.

Your support helps us:

  • Run 16 weekly foodbank sessions across Horsham District
  • Staff our Hub on the Move mobile foodbank
  • Welcome people in at Connecting Cafés
  • Sort and price donations in our charity shop and online store
  • Support people with budgeting guidance and benefits checks
  • Welcome fundraisers, event volunteers and community ambassadors

Who can volunteer?

We welcome people from all walks of life:

  • Students and professionals
  • Retired community members
  • Families and carers
  • Corporate groups and workplace volunteering teams
  • Anyone who cares about their community and wants to help

You don’t need specialist training, just a caring heart and willingness to help.

Ways you can get involved

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we receive regular food donations that need sorting and preparing before reaching families.

You’ll help with:

  • Checking dates and sorting food into categories
  • Preparing food orders for foodbank clients

This role is ideal if you like practical tasks and working behind the scenes as part of a friendly team.

Foodbank volunteer

For many families, our foodbank is the difference between having nothing to eat and being able to put a meal on the table.

You’ll help with:

  • Preparing the foodbank for client sessions
  • Greeting and welcoming clients
  • Supporting people to access the foodbank
  • Completing basic record-keeping

This role suits people who enjoy working directly with others and offering reassurance at difficult moments.

We run two Connecting Cafés each week, one in Roffey and one in Pulborough, helping tackle food poverty and isolation.

You’ll help with:

  • Creating a warm, welcoming environment
  • Taking orders at tables
  • Serving hot and cold drinks
  • Serving prepared meals
  • Clearing tables
  • Taking payments

Your presence helps people feel relaxed, included and cared for.

Charity shop volunteer

Our Love It Again charity shop on West Street is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30am–5:00pm. Income from the shop is vital to funding our services.

You’ll help with:

  • Assisting customers and offering advice
  • Keeping the shop clean and tidy
  • Rotating stock and improving displays
  • Taking payments

Customer-facing experience is helpful but not essential. Full training is provided.

  • Help with event set-up and take-down
